RE: Food you USED to hate, but don't now

My likes and dislikes now have more to do with triggering heartburn.
Talk to your Doctor. A few years ago I began taking "ACIPHEX" It absolutely changed my life. NO MORE HEARTBURN!

RE: Warning/Please read and becareful

Kathie,
Thanks for posting your experience. I don't se how you could have done anything to have been any safer or more aware. I know that sometimes I am distracted and hearing about what happened to you will help me to stay more aware of my surroundings.
Recently I read a hint that I think is a good one. It was suggested that you use the camera on your phone to take a photo of your car's license plate. I don't know about anyone else but I don't have mine memorized and in the case of an auto theft I would have to go to my files at home to find it.
Before we left on our last trip I made copies , front and back, of all the stuff John and I carry in our wallets. I left a copy in a file at home and hid another copy away in the camper in case one of us were to loose or have one of our wallets stolen while we were on the road.
No doubt others will have more safety hints.
I want to thank you again for sharing your story.

RE: Spreadsheet for Camping List...

Yes I do. I put the non-skid stuff down in the cabinets and the heat is so hot it melted it onto anything that was sitting on it. When it gets to 110+ degrees here, it's even hotter inside the TC. It ruins your stuff. I almost ruined an extension cord just sitting on the floor of the truck this summer. The cord was sitting on top of the fastguns and they got so hot, it almost melted the rubber coating of the extension cord.
WOW !!!! I had no idea.

RE: Spreadsheet for Camping List...

Seriously .... I can understand moving items out that might be affected by the heat or the cold but do you guys actually move all that stuff out between trips? I'm thinking that you don't.
I do believe that a list of items that are useful/necessary for comfortable camping is good to review now and again but a check list for each trip?

RE: Heating with no Electricity??????

You probably have a built in heater which is fueled with propane. These heaters also use battery power to circulate the heat. That is where the problem is ... The battery powered fan can run down the batteries.
We use a down comforter and have never been cold during the night. We do turn on the heater for awhile before we get up in the morning. I must admit we never have camped when it was colder than about 26.
Many people use catalytic heaters. No doubt someone who has experience with them will chime in.
I also understand that there are 12v electric mattress pads but I don't have any experience with them either.

RE: Adventurer leaks

Our neighborhood RV store replaced the hatch for us. Apparently they are some what stock... The new one is not the same as the original. It is solid and lets in less light. This is good first thing in the morning and sort of a drag the rest of the time.

RE: Adventurer leaks

We had that problem with the escape hatch. I fixed it with duct tape until we were able to replace it. They get brittle.
I don't remember if you have an air conditioner or not. If so check to make sure that it hasn't become loose. In our MH the air conditioner was loose and water traveled inside the ceiling and showed up in a couple of different places.

RE: wash the dishes or paper plates?

I don't believe the waste water theory. All water gets recycled, one way or the other. Either by man or by mother nature by means of the water cycle.
Yep..... that is probably true but boondock for a week or two in a truck camper and you will have a whole new appreciation for water conservation.

We wash dishes 95% of the time. We do use an occasional paper plate and at lunch we sometimes use paper napkins.

RE: RV parking ordinance.

I wouldn't complain too loud about people doing what they have to do to survive, as you may one day soon be out there doing the same thing.
You are absolutely right! It could be me. Believe me I am not without compassion.
However, I feel that when people are fulltiming in their RVs (no matter the reason) they should actually find a place to park that is within their budget and not occupy a public parking area. To me it becomes just about the same as any homeless person squatting anywhere....just with a nicer "shopping cart".
When I first posted I was honestly more interested in the idea that the city wanted to limit the time a RV owner could park in front of their own home. I never meant to open the whole "homeless...... It could be you next" can of worms. If I offended anyone I would like to sincerely apologize.

RE: more full-timing questions, power usage, batteries etc

Let me begin by saying that I know almost NOTHING about the whole 12volt thing. All I knew was that other people were able to run a TV and we couldn't! This didn't make sense to me.
What I was doing was plugging in a 400w inverter into the cigarette lighter plug thing ..... Then plugging in a new 19" flat screen TV. (On the back it says 60HZ I looked that up and let me be honest .... I didn't understand what I read.)
OH... I almost forgot to mention that we have two NEW batteries and one solar panel.
We could see the TV just fine BUT if we turned on a light, ran the water pump etc.... the alarm on the inverter would begin to chirp. Not good! I really wanted to be able to run a DVD player in addition to the TV because we rarely camp where there is any TV reception and a movie now and then would be nice!
One thing I did understand was that the wiring from the batteries needed to be heavy and needed to be as short as possible. I looked at the wiring that was running from one side of the camper to the other and I could only see one set of heavy wire, which I discovered was going from the generator to the batteries. I decided that the problem was the small wiring to the little cigarette plug thing.
Here is what I did. I bought a 1,000w inverter at cost-co and had my brother-in-law wire it directly to the batteries. All the tests we did indicated that we can not only run the TV and DVD player we can turn on lights and flush the toilet too!!!!! LOL
I guess I really don't have a point other than to tell you about my experience and to mention that you probably should look into a solar panel or two if you are serious about full timing.

RE: RV parking ordinance.

Here in San Diego, if you were to visit almost any parking lot that is adjacent to the bay or ocean you will find the parking lots FILLED with RVs that are obviously not making a day visit or stopping to grab a couple of hours of sleep before getting back on the road. These are long term folks who are living in their RVs. They do cause problems for those of us who might enjoy spending "a day by the bay."
Okay .... maybe they don't cause me an actual problem other than they are occupying a space that I might like to use for the day but I do believe that by their presence they send a negative message about RVers in general. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to see that these people are living in their RVs. Living in your RV is entirely different than parking in front of your own home.
I am of the opinion that a public parking area which has most of the spaces taken up by fulltimers, is more of a concern than having a few RVs parked in a Wal-Mart parking lot.

RV parking ordinance.

There is an interesting discussion going on concerning overnight parking here in San Diego. I thought that some of you might find it interesting too.
RV parking ordinance vote gets postponed
By David Hasemyer
STAFF WRITER
September 16, 2008
SAN DIEGO – Recreational vehicle owners got a brief reprieve yesterday when the San Diego City Council postponed a vote on an ordinance banning overnight parking of RVs, trailers and campers on city streets.
Council members deferred the vote until Oct. 28, saying they want to know how law enforcement staffing would have to change to enforce the ordinance and how the city would pay for costs associated with implementing it.
Recreational vehicles parked on neighborhood streets have become the bane of many residents, who complain the vehicles are unsightly, often left for weeks without being moved, take up precious parking spaces and restrict access to driveways and alleys.
Residents from Point Loma to La Jolla urged the council to impose the ban.
“We need this ordinance to stop dead in its tracks the trend of turning our neighborhood streets into storage yards,” San Diego resident Lou Cumming told the council.
Council members said they were leaning toward a ban, but asked the Mayor's Office to explain how the city will cover the estimated $41,500 to post signs warning of the new parking rules and the $228,000 needed for processing permits allowing limited parking.
Violators would be guilty of an infraction and could be fined $100.
The proposed ordinance provides residents with the option of obtaining 72-hour parking permits for RVs and trailers. Residents would be limited to 24 permits annually, and residents and their guests would have to park within 150 feet of their address.
Not everyone who spoke yesterday supported the ordinance.
Resident Larry Purcell quarreled with the city's position that RV parking constitutes a safety issue and quality-of-life question.
“That is misleading,” he said. “The real issue is people living in RVs and long-term street parking. No responsible RV owner would condone either one of those.”
He said problems could be addressed by enforcing existing parking regulations, which allow vehicles to be parked on city streets for up to 72 hours before being moved at least one-tenth of a mile.
“There is no justification to require a city resident legally parking a legally registered vehicle on a city street to be subjected to this ordinance,” Purcell said.
And here is a letter to the editor that was in today's paper that I found interesting.
Delay discussion of RV restrictions
Regarding “RV parking ordinance vote gets postponed” (Our Region, Sept. 16):
Now is not the time for the city to put additional restrictions on RV parking. For those who have lost their home to foreclosure and are fortunate enough to have an RV to live in temporarily, the 72-hour restriction should work for now. Besides the loss of their home, they are experiencing the same money-tight conditions the rest of us are, and are probably working out emotional issues as well. The city should back off and address the issue at a more appropriate time.

RE: Stove: Can I take the oven part off?

We don't have an oven and it is the one thing I wish we had! I keep thinking .......Biscuits and Gravy. YUMMMMM !!!
For several years we carried a small toaster oven but since we almost never have hookups (and I really hate the generator noise) we only used it twice. Recently I decided I was wasting space and moved it out.
You do have to admit that biscuits and gravy, on a cold morning, sounds really good!

RE: Leak in my new Lance ****Update***

On our first trip in the camper we thought we had a leak right over the bed. It appeared to be coming from the egress window. Come to find out it was only condensation and once I learned how to leave a window cracked the problem was solved! I hope your leak is easily and successfully repaired.
Just for the record .... It is NOT a good idea to boil water on a cold night with all the windows tightly closed! DUH!
